Why Frame Rate and Tempo Matter More Than You Think
Video and music measure time differently.
Video divides time into frames. Music divides time into beats and subdivisions.
When you bring music into an edit, those two timing systems begin interacting.
Sometimes they align in simple, repeatable ways. Sometimes they create more complex patterns across the frame grid.
Neither is necessarily better.
What matters is knowing which relationship you're working with.
Two Different Ways of Measuring Time
Video has a fixed frame grid.
Music has its own temporal grid determined by tempo.
At some combinations of frame rate and tempo, musical intervals correspond neatly with whole numbers of frames.
At others, beats and subdivisions fall at changing positions relative to the frame boundaries.
That isn't an error.
It's simply the mathematical relationship between the two timing systems.
Once you understand that relationship, you can decide whether you want to work closely with it, loosely around it, or deliberately against it.
What Does Frame-Accurate Mean?
In FrameFit, a frame-accurate relationship means a musical interval can correspond to a repeatable whole-frame pattern at the selected frame rate.
This can be useful when you want cuts, movement or other events to follow musical timing very precisely.
An approximate relationship behaves differently. Musical events may fall at different positions relative to frame boundaries as the sequence progresses.
Approximate doesn't mean unusable.
It simply gives you a different timing relationship to work with.
A Simple Example
Imagine you're editing with a 128 BPM track.
At one frame rate, a useful musical subdivision might correspond to a repeating whole number of frames.
At another frame rate, the same subdivision may fall between frame boundaries.
As the music continues, its position relative to those frame boundaries changes.
Nothing has gone wrong.
You're seeing the interaction between two different timing grids.

Why This Matters in an Edit
Editors rarely work with music in isolation.
An edit can contain many simultaneous timing demands: dialogue, captions, movement, graphics, transitions, narrative beats, shot duration and musical rhythm.
Understanding the relationship between tempo and frame rate gives you one more piece of that temporal picture.
You might want a musical accent to land precisely on a frame.
You might prefer a looser relationship.
You might build broad sections around musical phrases while allowing individual cuts to move independently.
There isn't one correct way to use the relationship.
The advantage is being able to see it before deciding.
Beat Detection Answers a Different Question
Beat detection analyses the audio signal to identify detectable rhythmic events.
It works particularly well when the music contains clearly defined transients such as drums, percussion or other strong attacks.
Frame rate and tempo analysis asks a different question.
It doesn't ask:
Where did a rhythmic event occur?
It asks:
How does musical time relate to the frames on my timeline?
That relationship exists whether the music contains obvious transients or not.
A sustained pad, ambient texture or legato passage may offer very little for conventional beat detection to identify while still having a defined tempo and temporal structure.

The purpose of measurement isn't to tell you what to choose.
It's to let you understand the consequences of the choice.

Frame rate and tempo don't need to align perfectly for an edit to work.
They simply create a relationship.
Once that relationship is visible, you can follow it, work around it, combine it with other timing systems, or ignore it completely.
