Designing Timing Before You Choose Music

Music is often one of the first timing structures introduced into an edit.

Once it's there, it's easy for its beat, tempo and phrasing to begin shaping everything around it.

But music doesn't have to define the structure of the edit.

You can establish visual timing first, then choose music that works with it.

Timing Exists Before Music

Every edit already contains timing.

Dialogue has duration. Text needs time to be read. Movement creates natural points of emphasis. Shots need enough time to communicate information. Scenes accelerate and breathe. Narrative moments carry different weights.

Music adds another timing system to the piece.

It doesn't have to become the timing system.

An Edit Can Contain Multiple Rhythms

A single piece can contain several timing systems at once:

  • dialogue and speech
  • captions and reading time
  • shot duration
  • movement
  • graphics and animation
  • narrative beats
  • musical tempo and phrasing
  • frame timing

These rhythms don't always align neatly.

Start With the Edit

Where should it breathe?

Which moments need emphasis?

Add Music to the Structure

Once the edit has a temporal shape, you can introduce music without automatically rebuilding everything around it.
