What is temporal structure?+
Temporal structure is the organisation of events through time. In an edit, picture, text, dialogue, music, and other elements can each have their own timing requirements. Making those relationships visible helps you see how they interact before committing to individual decisions.
Why make timing visible?+
Timing affects every edit whether it is explicitly planned or not. A visible structure gives you a reference against which you can place, compare and adjust different elements of the edit.
Can an edit have multiple timing structures?+
Yes. Different elements can operate at different rates or follow different patterns simultaneously. A broad pacing structure might organise the piece while additional layers guide captions, picture changes, music, graphics or individual events.
What is the difference between structure and events?+
A timing structure provides an underlying framework. Events are the individual edits, sounds, words, movements or other elements placed in relation to it. Separating the two lets you change individual decisions without necessarily changing the underlying organisation.
What is frame-accurate timing?+
Video can only place an edit on a frame boundary. Frame-accurate timing describes a temporal relationship in which the intended timing points coincide with actual video frames rather than falling between them.
What is frame drift?+
Frame drift occurs when a repeating timing interval does not align exactly with the frame grid. Over time, the intended timing points and available frame boundaries progressively move relative to one another.
Why are some tempos exact?+
Some tempos produce beat intervals that divide cleanly into the duration of the video frames. This allows repeating timing points to remain consistently aligned with frame boundaries.
What are near matches?+
Near matches are timing relationships that fall very close to exact frame alignment. The discrepancy may be small enough to be useful depending on the duration and requirements of the edit.
Why does frame rate matter?+
Frame rate determines the temporal grid available to the editor. Because different frame rates divide time differently, the same tempo or timing interval can behave differently at 24, 25, 29.97 or other frame rates.
PAL vs NTSC frame rates+
Integer frame rates such as 25 fps and fractional rates such as 23.976 or 29.97 fps create different mathematical relationships with repeating timing intervals. This changes which tempos and subdivisions align exactly with the frame grid.
Why does 25 fps have so many compatible tempos?+
Because 25 fps is an integer frame rate with particularly simple divisions of time, many commonly used timing intervals can resolve cleanly to whole-frame positions.
What are subdivisions?+
Subdivisions divide a larger timing interval into smaller repeating units. They allow a single underlying structure to support different levels of pacing and detail without requiring an entirely separate timing system.
What is timing density?+
Timing density describes how frequently reference points occur within a structure. Lower density can establish broad pacing, while higher density provides more potential points for individual events or edits.
What is the difference between timing structure and beat detection?+
Beat detection analyses existing audio to identify musical events. A timing structure is an independent framework that can exist before music and can organise picture, text, sound, music or other elements simultaneously.
Can timing structure exist without music?+
Absolutely. Timing is a property of the edit itself, not just its soundtrack. Pacing can be established from picture, speech, text, movement, narrative requirements or a deliberately designed temporal framework.
How do TimeObjects work?+

Quick Tips

Stack TimeObjects for different purposes.+
Use separate TimeObjects for picture, text, sound, music, or broader pacing. They can coexist without needing to resolve into a single rhythm.
Think in layers, not one master clock.+
An edit can contain several temporal systems simultaneously. The useful question is often not which one is correct, but how they relate.
Try temporal superposition.+
Overlay different timing structures and look for points where they converge, separate and reconverge. Those intersections can become useful moments for emphasis, transition or change.
Simple timing structures are often the most flexible.+
A clear, predictable timing structure gives you more options when replacing tracks.
Explore phase relationships.+
Two identical structures do not have to begin at the same point. Offset one against another and the relationship between them creates a new pattern without changing either underlying structure.
Use density to create hierarchy.+
A sparse guide can define the larger architecture while denser layers organise smaller events inside it. Structure can operate at several scales at once.
Break the pattern deliberately.+
Once a temporal expectation is visible, departing from it becomes a choice rather than an accident. Structure doesn't have to constrain the edit. It gives deviation something to push against.
