Beat Detection Explained
Beat detection identifies detectable rhythmic events in audio.
It can identify beats, transients, and other musical events, then place markers that make those events easier to find while editing.
That's useful.
But a detected beat tells you where something happened in the music.
It doesn't tell you how musical time relates to the frames on your timeline.
That's a different question.
What Beat Detection Does Well
Beat detection analyses the audio that's already there.
It works best when the music contains clearly defined rhythmic events and transients that can be reliably identified.
Depending on the tool and material, it can help you:
- locate beats and transients
- place markers automatically
- identify strongly defined rhythmic events
- navigate unfamiliar music
- find possible edit points
For rhythmically explicit material, that's extremely useful.
But detection depends on what can be detected in the audio.
Where Detection Becomes Less Certain
Not all music expresses its timing through clearly defined transients.
Ambient music, sustained textures, pads, drones, legato passages, soft attacks and more fluid rhythmic material may contain strong musical structure without providing obvious events for a detector to identify.
That creates an important distinction:
Beat detection infers timing from the audio signal.
FrameFit calculates timing from tempo and frame rate.
FrameFit doesn't need a kick, snare or transient to tell it where musical time is. The timing relationship exists whether the music makes it acoustically obvious or not.
What Beat Detection Doesn't Tell You
A detected beat can show you where an event occurs in the music.
It doesn't necessarily tell you:
- how that event relates to individual video frames
- whether the relationship repeats cleanly
- how subdivisions fall between frames
- how the relationship changes at another frame rate
- where timing differences accumulate over time
- what other timing relationships are available
The marker shows you the detected event. FrameFit shows you the underlying relationship.
Events vs Relationships
Beat detection and FrameFit look at timing from different directions.
Beat detection looks at the audio.
It asks:
Where are the rhythmic events?
FrameFit looks at the relationship between musical time and video time.
It asks:
How does this musical timing relate to my frames?
One identifies events.
The other reveals structure.
They can be used independently or together.
A Simple Example
Imagine a beat detector places markers throughout a piece of music.
Those markers accurately show where the beats occur.
But the beats may not fall on video frames in the same way each time. Some may land very close to a frame boundary; others may fall between frames.
The beat detector hasn't failed. It has correctly detected the music.
FrameFit is looking at something else: the relationship between that musical timing and the frame grid.
Once you can see that relationship, you can decide how you want to work with it.

If you want to understand how musical timing relates to your video timeline, use FrameFit.
If you need both kinds of information, use both.
Beat detection can show you where something happens.
FrameFit can show you the timing structure around it.
Neither needs to make the creative decision for you.
Detection finds the event. Measurement reveals the relationship.
Modern editing tools can identify more and more of what is happening inside your media.
That's valuable. But identifying an event and understanding its relationship to everything around it are different things.
